![]() By contrast, the English lyrics are nostalgic. The Irish lyrics were about a man being cuckolded, a bawdy and humorous ditty. ![]() Īn early version of the song appeared on a ballad sheet in Cork City in the mid nineteenth century in macaronic form. Petrie wrote that he believed "Do Bhí Bean Uasal" came from either County Clare or County Limerick, and was in any case a Munster song. Joyce came from Ballyorgan in the Ballyhoura Mountains, on the borders of counties Limerick and Cork. Music collector George Petrie obtained two settings of this melody from fellow collector Patrick Joyce. The melody has been traced to an Irish-language song, "Do Bhí Bean Uasal" ("There Was a Noblewoman"), which is attributed to the poet Cathal Buí Mac Giolla Ghunna, who died in 1756 in County Clare. The 1964 album “ The First Hurrah!” by The Clancy Brothers includes a song entitled “Carrickfergus (Do Bhí Bean Uasal)". In his book, "Ireland Sings" (London, 1965), Behan gives three verses, of which he says that he obtained two verses from O'Toole and wrote the middle one himself. It is not clear if Mr bin Laden visited anywhere else in Northern Ireland, but is understood his entry to the Republic was not challenged by the authorities. The modern song is due to Dominic Behan, who published it in 1965.īehan relates that he learned the song from actor Peter O'Toole. The experience, however, left him questioning his father's war against the West, which culminated in the 9/11 attacks in the United States. Omar in his younger days travelled to the front line in Afghanistan with some of his father's followers. They added that it was clear Omar was really interested in the history of the castle, and then after enjoying his visit to the historic landmark to pose for pictures on the seafront. The friend explained: "During his visit to Carrickfergus he went up into the tower of the castle and watched as one of the staff there used an old-style crossbow to demonstrate how the castle was defended in times past." More recently a rendition by Loudon Wainwright III was featured on critically-acclaimed US period crime drama series, Boardwalk Empire.Īlthough the song is synonymous with the seaside town, there is a school of thought that argues the song may actually refer to a location in the Republic, given the lyrics refer to Kilkenny. There have been versions by The Dubliners, Van Morrison and the Chieftains, and Brian Kennedy. The newspaper reported that a friend revealed Mr bin Laden wanted to visit Carrickfergus because of the popular folk song of the same which has been recorded by countless musical artists over the decades. ![]() However, it only emerged when the Irish Mail on Sunday published the photos at the weekend. His visit to Co Antrim, after arriving in the Republic at Dublin Airport, took place some time last summer. Omar bin Laden (39) - who is one of the children from the 9/11 terror chief's first marriage and the only one to publicly condemn his father's deeds - visited Carrickfergus where he enjoyed visiting the castle, posing for pictures. One of Northern Ireland's most popular landmarks has had the thumbs up from a very unlikely visitor - the son of dead al Qaeda terrorist Osama bin Laden - and all because of the town's links to a beloved Irish folk song. ![]() The culminating session was probably the most satisfying campaign conclusion I’ve ever run - against heavy odds, the droids outwitted the Intelligence officer, took an Admiral hostage, and delivered an Imperial heavy cruiser to the Rebellion. Once we had that focus, everything clicked, and the last few sessions of the campaign were really engaging and fun. The core of the campaign became a cat-and-mouse relationship between and Imperial Navy Intelligence officer and the PCs. We discussed this after a few sessions and decided to cap the campaign with a grand finale. Without some sort of narrative frame, the comedy can fall a bit flat, and the story doesn’t gel. ![]() The comedic elements in roleplaying tend to be reactive, almost as though the GM is the straight man and the players are the comedians. Our initial concept of three droids running amok was somewhat comedic by design, but we discovered that this was difficult to pull off in a sandbox setting. With a different group of players I might have been fine sticking to more typical commando team operations, spy missions, or fighter squadron exploits. This requires a certain amount of flexibility on the part of the GM and players alike. Instead of NPCs giving the characters missions, they’d determine the missions, plan them, and carry them out on their own. So when I offered to run Age of Rebellion again, we took a different approach. The players told me they didn’t have enough agency, enough control over their characters’ actions. I ran them through The Perlimian Haul and Onslaught at Arda I, and everyone enjoyed the sessions, but something wasn’t quite right for our group. We hit upon this campaign concept after a brief initial run I set up several months ago, in which the characters were operating under a more traditional military leadership structure. IG–186, the Magna-Droid and former Separatist, was played by Manny. Emerson played TC–21, a protocol droid who believed any Stormtroopers he encountered were responsible for the death of his maker, whom he worshipped as a diety. He wanted all droids to be free of human control. Matt played Knife, a cunning and manipulative R5 unit with a voice synthesizer. They were an unconventional bunch, to say the least. They were given wide lattitude, lots of autonomy, and a broad mandate to sabotage high-value Imperial facilities, assassinate particularly effective enemy military and political leaders, and disrupt important operations where possible. The campaign was built around a simple foundation - the player characters were a Rebel direct action cell created to hit the Empire hard where they least expect it. We enjoy games that cultivate deep immersion in the setting, we enjoy thrilling stories as much or more than the thrill of victory, and we’re easy marks for well-produced game books with evocative art. That’s primarily because we’ve been splitting our time between D&D 5 and Edge of the Empire, both of which have kept us fully engaged. Our tastes have changed a bit in the last couple of years, and we haven’t been exploring as many different games. I cut my teeth on D&D in the early 80s, and the rest of the group has been roleplaying since the 90s. So we came to Age of Rebellion biased in favor of FFG’s approach to Star Wars.Ĭollectively we’ve played a wide variety of games, from Apocalypse World to RuneQuest, over a long stretch of time. Earlier Matt ran an epic Edge of the Empire campaign that was hands-down my favorite campaign ever as a player (see my EotE actual play review). I ran the game for three players: Emerson, Manny, and Matt. ![]() We just finished an eleven-session Age of Rebellion campaign. If you’ve ever wanted to take down an AT-AT, form up for a run at a Star Destroyer, or infiltrate an Imperial command post, Age of Rebellion may be the game for you. The visually stunning rulebook reinforces this, evoking the struggle between Empire and Rebellion. The game’s core mechanics give gamemasters and players the lattitude to introduce twists and turns rather than mere success or failure, and the overall feel of play is Star Wars through and through. Because this isn’t a traditional murder-hobos-in-search-of-power-and-treasure affair, this sort of campaign may require more than the usual up-front discussion between GM and players to be sure expectations are aligned. It is built for creating campaigns in which the players characters are heroes of the Rebellion. Like its predecessor Edge of the Empire, the Age of Rebellion Core Rulebook is a tremendously fun game. Star Wars: Age of Rebellion – The Actual Play Review ![]() The slower pace of eFootball 2022 can sometimes work to its credit, however. Its referees also tend to make more logical calls. EA’s FIFA 22, for example, has a faster pace that keeps matches more intense. Both titles have the same core elements, but depending on what you’re looking for you will likely have a preference. eFootball 2022 vs FIFA 22įIFA 22 has long been the staunchest competitor when it comes to virtual soccer games, and the differences between the two are largely subjective. Just like in the actual soccer sports game, the right manager can make all the difference and plays a critical role when it comes to targeting your most coveted signings. This added layer of customization is one of the most enjoyable, as it encourages a more angled strategy when planning long-term success. You sign players and managers that best synergize with your chosen formation and tactics. Creative teamĬreative Team lets you sign and develop players of your choice, gearing them up and practicing with them until you’re ready to test your hand and face off against rivals from all across the globe. With the eFootball World, you can also set the roster for a team of your own unique composition. Choose which you want to play as, and then set your preference for the rival team, whether it's controlled by AI or by a human opponent. Regardless of whether you’re playing online or in single-player, you can pick from nine authentic teams: Manchester United, FC Barcelona, FC Bayern München, São Paulo, Arsenal, Juventus, River Plate, and Flamengo. The caveat to this is, however, that a fast internet connection will still play a crucial role in how smoothly a cross-platform match runs. Now PC, mobile, and console players can go head-to-head against each other regardless of which platform they’re playing the game from. Players will now have more pinpoint control of their player’s movements, and the camera now strikes a better balance between the intensity of a play and the more strategic view of the pitch.įor fans of multiplayer video games, one of the foremost selling points for eFootball 2022 is its cross-platform support. ![]() To create an experience that feels like a worthy overhaul from PES 2021, KONAMI and PES Productions had to start from the ground up with an entirely new game Unreal Engine, revamped animations, and improved game controls. To feel the uniqueness of each member of your dream team goes a long way in keeping you invested in their success. The soccer simulator plays smoother than ever before, but it’s the little things like jaw structure, limb movement, and overall gesticulations that really breathe life into each player. Graphically speaking, eFootball 2022 has come furthest when it comes to player animations and facial expressions. Nothing is wasted, and nothing is unnecessary. Portal 1 is basically video game perfection, literally nothing about it should be changed. I always liked the Zero Punctuation reviews on the two games, and felt it illustrated why I prefer 1 as well. I haven't played it yet, if you don't have anyone to play it with then maybe we could group up :) It seemed like there is quite some more lore if you dig deeper.Īnd as someone else wrote, there is still the COOP mode of Portal 2 to be played which needs 3-5 hours according to a quick google search. I also read a wiki article about 'Rattman' which was quite interesting. So maybe take a look at your achievements and since you liked the puzzles more than I did, it may be worthwhile to get them on your own. I missed about a dozen singleplayer achievements and looked up their solution on Youtube today. I also really liked Cave Johnson, he added a lot (of humor) to the destroyed facility and its mysterious atmosphere in the beginning. The final hour of the game was just perfect! Wheatly was hilarious throughout the whole game and similar to you I cracked up a lot :D The combination with Glados in her new potato role worked perfectly and made the game more enjoyable for me than part 1. What kept me coming back was the dialogue though. But objectively speaking, I think the puzzles were really well designed. I actually finished Portal 2 last night :D More than a year after I started it though.I'm not into puzzle games in general and thus never played it longer than 30-60 minutes before I lost interest and didn't touch it for a few weeks/months. Is it worth it to go back through a second time? Are there things you can miss? And is there more info about the lore? Because I found some of the things you learn in Portal 2 pretty interesting, but it felt like there might be more going on than was explained. If you managed to read even some of this, I'd love to know your thoughts on these games! I'm also curious to know about these games replayability. The songs were also top notch and will definitely be added to my spotify playlist.Īnyway, I just had to get my thoughts out there somewhere, and I knew some of you guys might appreciate it. ![]() The atmosphere being slightly creepy was also really well executed, especially in the first game when you start finding things in the walls. The writing was also amazing! I loved the characters, and found myself cracking up at almost every robotic line delivered, especially when they were mocking me. I felt like a superhero, and it was probably my favorite part of the gameplay. But, I suppose to clarify, after getting used to the mind-boggling perspective shifts, it was ridiculously fun to figure out how to fly through the air, picking up speed with each portal you went through, and crashing into your destination. The portals were 100% the highlight of the gameplay, obviously. That didn't stop me from enjoying the game or the puzzles though. Each new tool given felt fun to use, although I did start to feel like they were getting a little gimmicky by the end of the second game. Either way, the puzzles in both games were extremely satisfying, especially after the ones that had me yelling at Glados in frustration. I enjoy puzzles, however I wouldn't say that I'm great at them. Now, on to me gushing about how much I loved Portal. Yet, I somehow didn't get around to playing it until a few weeks ago when I was desperately bored and saw that the bundle for both Portal games was on sale, so I bought it. ![]() ![]() I had even watched some snippets of a let's play years ago and thought the whole idea was fascinating. I had heard of Portal before, and I understood the basic concept. I should preface with what I knew going into these games. Before I even start my rambling, I just have to say, if you haven't played Portal yet, go do it. I now understand why Portal is so popular and how it has managed to gain recognition even outside of the hard-core "gamer" community. The iOS features will be available later this week. I thought the “The iPhones 6” formulation helped emphasize that. The iPhone 6 and 6 Plus were different, but clearly of the same generation. The 5C was basically the year-old iPhone 5 in new colorful plastic bodies. That title fit, because the 5S and 5C were definitely different phones - the 5S had a new A7 chip (the first to go 64-bit), Touch ID, and a new camera. My thinking with the first of these - the iPhone 6 generation - was that I didn’t want to use the title “The iPhone 6 and 6 Plus”, because the year prior I’d used the title “The iPhone 5S and 5C”. That’s not how most people would pluralize these iPhone pairs (but some would - there’s some legitimate precedent with pluralizations like “mothers-in-law” and “attorneys general” where the adjective comes after the noun). The last four years, I’ve coyly titled my iPhone reviews “ The iPhones 6”, “ The iPhones 6S”, “ The iPhones 7”, and “ The iPhones 8”. Let’s Get the Size Thing Out of the Way First I wish I knew what he knows about the iPhone camera pipeline for the next few years. His emphatic, instant confidence in that statement - that in June 2015 Apple was already the leading camera company in the world - made me think one thing: And trust me, Schiller - an avid hobbyist photographer - understands exactly what those companies’ cameras are capable of. It was about comparing Apple to companies like Canon, Nikon, Sony, Fujifilm, and Leica. ![]() But to say Apple is the leading camera company in the world, full stop, wasn’t just about comparing Apple to other phone makers. I’d venture to say almost everyone in the audience for that show would have agreed with that. Of course Phil Schiller thinks Apple is the world’s leading company in all those categories. Go to and look at the products atop the page: Mac, iPad, iPhone, Watch, TV, Music. That moment, more than any other in that interview, really stuck with me. Nearing the end (skip ahead to just before the 48:00 mark in the video), and wanting to talk about the iPhone and photography, I said, “I think it’s so clear - and the ‘Shot with iPhone’ marketing campaign shows that you guys clearly believe it too - that Apple has become one of, if not the, leading camera companies in the world.”īefore I could get to a question, Schiller jumped in. Three years ago, Phil Schiller was my guest on stage at The Talk Show Live From WWDC 2015. The iPhones XS Tuesday, 18 September 2018 Through this process, I’m exploring how we can push the concept of self to its limit by obscuring it through multiple processes,” she says.įor her last series of self-portraits, Parker Lily employed a combination of polaroid photography and photo emulsion. “These paintings are the remnants of four different stages of representation: the physical moment when I modeled the photograph of myself the AI-generated portrait and the painted self portrait. She painted elements like hair, textures, and doll-like features, freely incorporating whatever imagery the digitized prints evoked for her. Parker Lily then created a series of acrylic paintings based on these AI-generated portraits. The resulting false selves bear no resemblance to an identifiable person, but nonetheless constitute self-portraits. She adjusted the settings so the software would interpret her likeness incorrectly, as a piece of earth, fire, and a young child. Her first series, You Can’t See Me, is a collection of striking abstract portraits she created by taking photographs of herself and running them through an AI generator. In preparation for her project, she extensively researched Piper’s work as well as that of other portrait artists, including Francesca Woodman, Claude Cahun, and Frida Kahlo. Parker Lily’s summer project entitled Eye of the Beholder: Interrogating Identity, Audience, and the Painted Self Portrait, consists of a series of paintings, photographs, and digital creations that explore the mutability and subjectivity of the self. This summer, I wanted to explore the concept of identity formation through the act of seeing and being seen.” ![]() “It inextricably informs the way we feel about ourselves and how we move through the world. “How we are seen and treated by others completes a conception of oneself,” explains Parker Lily. Piper posits that identity involves two parts: a self that is embodied by the individual and a self that is completed by being viewed by another. She dressed in drag stuffed a towel in her mouth and rode the subway visited an art gallery wearing a blindfold and walked down the street wearing a sign that read “Wet Paint.” Piper would dramatically alter her appearance and enter public spaces in New York City. Parker Lily was inspired by the work of artist and philosopher Adrian Piper whose public performances in the 1970s challenged social expectations around identity, race, and gender. As a 2022 Summer Scholar, she conducted research on portraiture and created a series of haunting self-portraits using traditional mediums and new artificial intelligence (AI) technology.
